Our first moment in Norwich was in a Pub and we hope than the last moment it will be in a Pub too. When you are in a pub you have to take some minutes to think about the history and essence of Britain's favorite social space with a pint of Britain's favorite drink: The beer.
One Pub is an important part of British life. People talk, eat, drink, meet their friends and relax there. The word pub is short for public house. There are over 60,000 pubs in the UK (53,000 in England and Wales, 5,200 in Scotland and 1,600 in Northern Ireland).
We were invited to drink a welcome pint at the Blackhourse´s pub. There were classmate all and our teacher waiting for us.
We were drinking a very big pint of lager beer. You can choose between different kinds of beers in an English pub. More popular today though is lager, which is lighter in colour and served cold. Guinness, a very dark, creamy kind of beer called a stout, is made in Ireland and is popular all over Britain.
In the Blackhorse, cider made from apples, is very popular. Like wine, it is described as sweet or dry, but is drunk in beer glasses and can be stronger than beer. Beers are served in "pints" for a large glass and "halves" for a smaller one.
We were drinking our beers outside in a very nice garden. There we were meeting all the students and teachers included in NILE course.
We were speaking about the social life of Norwich and we learnt a diferents words about football, usefull vocabulary to stay in England and of course making new friends.
It was really funny and we hope to have moments like that a lot of times in our time course.
British pubs are required to have a licence, which is difficult to obtain, and allows the pub to operate for up to 24 hours. Most pubs are open from 11 to 11(Where Blackhorse is included). So we had to leave the pub at this time and we continued the party at the campus.
